    THANK YOU!

Join the Elk County Council on the Arts on a bus trip for a Sunday matinee performance of The Marriage of Figaro at the Benedum Center in Pittsburgh.

Ridgway native Brian Kontes plays Dr. Bartolo in one of the most popular comic operas of all time. Filled with amusing cases of mistaken identity and romantic subterfuge, plus music by a Mozart at the height of his powers, The Marriage of Figaro has stood the test of time for centuries.

Figaro, a happy bachelor, is in love with the Countess’s servant Susanna, who he plans to wed that very day. However, their employer Count Almaviva has his eye on Susanna. In fact, the Count intends to invoke the hated feudal practice of droit de seigneur - the infamous right of the lord to sleep with a commoner’s bride on her wedding night.

Figaro, Susanna, and the Countess are understandably outraged at this possibility, and are determined not only to prevent it, but to teach the Count a lesson while they’re at it.

The bus will depart from the Elk County Council on the Arts at 10AM on Sunday, November 12th. We will arrive at the Benedum Center at approximately 12:30PM. There is an optional Pre-Opera Talk for all ticket holders beginning at 1PM. The Marriage of Figaro begins at 2PM. The performance is approximately 3 hours long with one intermission. We will board the bus immediately after the performance and make one stop for dinner on our way back to Ridgway. Our anticipated return time is around 9:30PM.

Seats are limited and reservations are required. The reservation deadline is October 11th.

Reservations are transferable but not refundable.

This class is suitable for beginners and suggested for ages 16 and up. All materials will be provided.

Participants will be guided by artist Julie Mader to create a tartan pattern on a 8" x 54” crepe de chine scarf blank in colors of their own choosing.  Using brushes silk dyes will be applied in overlapping layers to create depth and pattern for a one-of-a-kind work of wearable art.  The cost of the class includes having the dyes set by the artist (who will ship the projects to ECCOTA for pickup in 7-10 days max. turnaround time).

WHY STEAM SET?  Steam setting results in slightly brighter colors on the finished product.  I am offering steam-set of the dyes with the crepe de chine tartan scarves since there is a higher chance that there will be areas of pure white desired at the end of painting the tartan pattern.  Steam setting will reserve the bright white (whereas white areas will be dulled during a chemical set due to the nature of the process).

The teaching artist will steam set the scarf, wash it in professional detergent to remove any loose dyes, press the scarf and ship it back to ECCOTA where it may be picked up.
